Atlanta Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: What to Do If You Found an Abandoned Wild Animal

It is not that uncommon that a wild animal will end up within our premises. Adult animals have successfully adapted on the life in the urban jungle which is why you will see them too often. Forcefully removing them from their natural habitat is an offense under the law. While it is best to avoid the native adult wild animals, the baby animals will be helpless on their own.

Things You Should Do If You Come Across an Orphaned Baby Georgia Animal
In case you seem to be concerned on an abandoned animal since they are showing a high level of distress or they have an injury that needs to be treated, the local wildlife rehabilitation center can assist you. Avoid conducting first aid treatment especially without the instruction of the specialist. Understand that these animals have unique needs. You might not be aware that you are doing them more harm than good.

Determining If the Babies Have been Abandoned
After a few weeks old, the baby animals will start to explore the surroundings near their den. This is perfectly normal, and it does not always mean that they have been abandoned. You should leave them alone but be sure to watch them from a distance. In case the mother did not return after a couple of hours, then the babies have probably been orphaned.

Calling the Local Atlanta Wildlife Rehabilitation Center
Before you do anything else, you need to inform the wildlife rehabilitation center about the situation. There are some information that you will need to provide to them in order to guarantee the safety of the baby animal. You will be asked to describe the animal. This will include the type, size, any distinct marking, and their color. If there are any injuries, you should also supply them with the information. You should inform them if there are other animals within the area. If possible, you should take a picture of the animal and send it to them.

Keep them Safe and Warm
When handling the baby animals, be sure to protect your hand with a disposable glove. Place the babies inside the carboard to contain them. Put the box in a dark environment to keep them calm. Place a heating pad inside the box but be sure to keep it away from the babies. If you do not have a heating pad, you may fill-up a bottle with warm water and wrap it in a towel. You may need to replace the content of the bottle after a couple of hours. You should do this while waiting for the rescuers to arrive.

There are times that the Atlanta animal will be dehydrated. Avoid feeding them with any solid object since it may choke them to death. If the rehabilitators will not provide you additional instruction to rehydrate them, then avoid giving them water. If the animal is too dehydrated, you may rehydrate them with a saline solution. A special feeding syringe should be used when feeding them.
